Capturing senior portraits is all about celebrating a major milestone in a location that feels both timeless and personal. While many seniors envision a classic beach backdrop, Myrtle Beach State Park offers a level of versatility that is hard to match anywhere else along the Grand Strand.
For this recent session, we arrived just as the sun began to peek over the Atlantic, and the results were nothing short of magic. Here is why this location should be at the top of your list for senior portraits.
There is a specific quality of light you can only find at sunrise. The soft, ethereal glow of the "golden hour" provides a natural radiance that perfectly highlights this exciting milestone. By starting on the shoreline as the sun crested over the horizon, we captured cinematic shots against the Atlantic with the beach and pier almost entirely to ourselves. For seniors who want a dreamy, high-end look, the early wake-up call is always worth it.
One of the biggest hurdles when planning a shoot is the commute, especially during the busy summer season. Myrtle Beach State Park sits in a perfect "sweet spot" on the coast. Whether you are staying in North Myrtle Beach or enjoying the quiet charm of a rental in Surfside Beach or Murrells Inlet, the park is a quick, straightforward drive.
It serves as the ideal middle ground, offering a secluded, "hidden gem" atmosphere without requiring a massive trek away from your home base.
What sets the State Park apart from a standard beach access is the incredible variety of "mini-environments" within walking distance:
Coastal Forests: Just steps away from the dunes, the park features winding trails and maritime forests with moss-draped oaks. These provide a moody, editorial contrast to the bright beach shots.
The Pier: The iconic wooden structure adds a touch of architectural interest and leading lines, perfect for more structured, modern poses.
Natural Dunes & Sea Oats: The protected dunes offer a lush, textured background that feels wild and untouched.
Best time for Light: Sunrise or an hour before sunset.
Outfit Changes: Because the landscape changes from woods to water, consider bringing a casual "nature" outfit and a more formal "beach" look to maximize the variety in your gallery.
Park Fees: There is a small entry fee per person, which goes directly toward preserving the beautiful landscapes we get to enjoy! WE HAVE ONE EXTRA PASS to get one car in free so we can meet you at the pay booth before the session.
