There is a reason golden hour is one of the most loved times for maternity photography on the beach. The light is soft, flattering, and naturally romantic, which makes it ideal for creating images that feel timeless and refined.

At Michele Coleman Photography in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, maternity sessions are designed to feel calm, comfortable, and beautifully guided. My approach combines emotional authenticity with careful composition, so each image reflects both connection and confidence.

This summer, I had the pleasure of capturing this magic for Lauren and Mike, a couple visiting from West Virginia. We met on a warm evening for a 30-minute maternity session, and the results were beautiful. Lauren was absolutely glowing in a simple, elegant white outfit that perfectly complemented the natural surroundings.

Why the Beach Works So Well for Maternity Portraits

The beach provides an ideal setting for natural, unposed poses. For Lauren and Mike’s session, we focused on capturing the genuine connection between them and their anticipation for their new baby. Lauren naturally cradled her growing bump, while Mike tenderly placed his hands over hers. We captured intimate moments, from quiet kisses on the sand (Image 2) to joyful interactions filled with laughter.

Lighting is crucial in any photo session, but it takes on special significance in maternity photography. We scheduled Lauren and Mike's session during the golden hour, the period just before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and exceptionally flattering. This gentle light beautifully illuminated Lauren's pregnant form, creating a romantic and dreamy atmosphere.

Maternity photos are all about capturing the genuine emotions and joy surrounding the arrival of a new family member. Throughout their session, I encouraged Lauren and Mike to interact naturally and express their love for each other and their baby. The resulting images perfectly convey the happiness, tenderness, and pure love they share.

  • Pricing: For sessions involving only the couple, pricing is the same as a couple’s session. However, if the session includes the whole family, a family package rate will apply.

  • Timing is Key: Schedule your session during the golden hour (just before sunset or just after sunrise) for the most flattering and magical light.

  • Focus on Connection: Don't be afraid to interact naturally and express your love for each other. The best photos are often the ones that capture genuine, unscripted moments.

  • Keep it Simple: When choosing an outfit, opt for simple, elegant clothing that will stand the test of time. White, cream, and pastel colors always work beautifully on the beach.
