As a senior photographer serving high school seniors across the Myrtle Beach area, there is nothing quite like capturing this exciting milestone in a young person’s life. While our classic sandy beaches are always a popular choice, there is something remarkably refreshing about stepping away from the oceanfront and exploring the quiet, scenic gems hidden along the Grand Strand.
Kayla’s recent senior portrait session in Little River, South Carolina, was a perfect example of why non-beach coastal settings are quickly becoming a favorite for local seniors.
For Kayla’s shoot, we headed to a picturesque spot situated right along the Intracoastal Waterway. Instead of fighting heavy ocean breezes or crowded shorelines, we were treated to a tranquil setting filled with tall, sweeping marsh grass, glass-like water reflections, weathered driftwood, and that signature warm Lowcountry light.
Shooting along the Intracoastal offers a completely different vibe than an open beach. The soft green and golden tones of the marsh, paired with rustic mossy live oaks and wooden boardwalks, create an organic backdrop that gives senior portraits a timeless, editorial feel. As the sun dipped lower, the calm water along the shell shoreline reflected the golden sky, creating a dreamlike setting for her photos.
Kayla did an incredible job choosing outfits that perfectly complemented the surrounding Lowcountry landscape:
Classic White Sunburst Dress: Her fitted white dress popped brilliantly against the rustic driftwood, calm water, and moss-draped branches, giving her water-edge portraits a fresh, elegant look.
Pink Gingham & Personal Details: For a second look, Kayla wore a soft pink gingham dress that looked gorgeous set against the lush marsh grass and winding wooden walkways.
Showcasing Her Passion: Kayla brought along her hair styling shears and round brush to showcase her love for cosmetology, adding a fun, personal element that tells her story.
During golden hour, the soft light filtering through the trees and across the water created a flattering, natural glow in every shot. Whether she was sitting among live oak branches or twirling on the boardwalk over the marsh, every frame felt relaxed, authentic, and effortlessly chic.
If you are currently planning your high school senior portraits in the Myrtle Beach or Little River area, here is why a marshland or Intracoastal Waterway session might be the ideal fit:
Private, Relaxed Environment: Enjoy a calm setting without crowded beachgoers, allowing you to feel completely comfortable in front of the lens.
Coastal Charm Without the Wind: You still get stunning water backdrops and coastal scenery, but without ocean winds or sand everywhere.
Diverse Backgrounds in One Spot: From wooden walkways and mossy live oaks to shell beaches and sweeping marsh grass, water-side locations offer incredible variety within a single shoot.
Whether you envision your senior pictures surrounded by the quiet charm of the Little River marshlands or along the coastline of the Grand Strand, my goal is always to design an enjoyable experience that results in photos that truly feel like you.
We work together on choosing the right location, timing, and wardrobe so that by the time shoot day arrives, all you have to do is show up and enjoy the moment!
Upcoming high school senior session dates fill up quickly, especially during prime golden hour windows in the spring and fall.
