There is something incredibly special about being a photographer in a destination like Myrtle Beach. Families come from all over the country to make memories here, but rarely does a session feel as full-circle as this one.
Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting up with a wonderful family visiting from West Virginia for a sunset session at Myrtle Beach State Park. But this wasn’t our first time working together—I actually had the honor of photographing the parents' wedding 15 years ago!
Having them reach out after more than a decade to capture their growing family was truly humbling. It is the greatest compliment a photographer can receive, and it reminded me why I love what I do.
While the Grand Strand has many beautiful spots, Myrtle Beach State Park remains a top choice for professional family photography for a few reasons:
Natural Backdrops: Between the maritime forest, the protected dunes, and the iconic pier, there is a stunning variety of textures beyond just the sand.
A Quiet Escape: It offers a more private, serene feel compared to the busier resort stretches, which is perfect for helping kids feel comfortable and relaxed.
The Golden Hour: The way the light hits the coastline here during sunset is unmatched, providing that soft, warm glow that makes every photo feel like a work of art.
For this session, the goal wasn't just "look at the camera and smile." Since this family hasn’t been in front of my lens since their wedding day, I wanted to capture the beautiful dynamic they’ve built over the last 15 years.
If you are traveling from West Virginia, Ohio, or anywhere across the map for a coastal getaway, a family session is the perfect "souvenir." Here are three quick tips for a successful beach session:
Coordinate, Don’t Match: Move away from identical outfits. Choose a color palette (like blues, creams, and soft greens) and let everyone’s individual style show.
Timing is Everything: "Golden Hour"—the hour before sunset—is the best time to get that dreamy, hazy light without the harsh shadows or squinting caused by the midday sun. Sunrise time is also a great choice to capture that amazing sun coming up over the ocean.
Trust the Process: The best memories happen in the "in-between" moments. Don't worry if the kids are being energetic; those candid laughs often end up being the favorite photos!
